- How tightly should you pinch the main
There is quite a bit of
misunderstanding about just how tightly the bolts that hold the main
rotors to the head should be.
Some people are
surprised that it even matters, but believe me, it is a very important
setting, and one that you need to check regularly if you do not remove
your main rotors each time after flying. (Why
don't you, its a safety check)
The best rule of thumb
as to how tight these bolts should be is a test most of us use
today. To perform this test, attach your main blades, and then
turn the head so that the blades are at 90 degrees to the helicopter
frame. Pick the helicopter up and then hold it by the tail.
Both main blades should NOT DROP BY THEMSELVES.
If they do drop by
themselves, tighten them a little and try again.
If they don't drop by
themselves, give the helicopter a single little shake down and then up,
and see if they start to fall then. If they do, you
have it just right, if not, loosen them and try both tests again.
Why is this so important
you may be asking ?
The first reason is that
if they are TOO LOOSE, they will probably lag behind the blade grips as
you spool the helicopter up, and this is quite likely to lead to both
blades hitting your boom. To prove this, rotate one of the blades
in the grip as far as it will go in one or other direction and
then repeat with the other in the opposite direction. Now slowly
rotate the head with your hand and look where the blade tips are
!!!!!! The same will happen as you spool down again after landing.
The second reason is
that the blades are a very important part of the aerodynamics of a
helicopter, and they need to be able to adjust themselves to be at
exactly the correct angle in the grips as you spool the motor up.
If they are to TIGHT, they will not be able to do this, which will lead
to bad vibrations, very poor lift characteristics, bad rotor blade
tracking, and a generally very unhappy helicopter.
MORAL HERE IS ALWAYS CHECK YOUR BLADE BOLTS TO ENSURE THEY ARE TIGHTENED
