400 - Why
is the Interceptor not CCPM ?
question, and one that could end up with a very long answer, but not
in this section of my heli help system ......
In the very
early days of RC helicopters, the radios that we had were fairly
crude to say the least, and very few offered the ability to do the
clever mixing functionality needed to control a CCPM based swash
The NON CCPM
helicopters were therefore pretty well the 'standard', so that the
more simple radios could still be used to control the
helicopter, which is of course far more complicated than controlling
Controlled Pitch Mixing) relies on the radios to mix the output of
all three of the swash plate servos to provide the correct movement
for not only pitch increases/decreases, but also to mix in Aileron
and Elevator variations as well. This means that if you were
to loose any one servo on a CCPM helicopter, you would lose all
control totally, as each servo has to do it's own bit to keeping th
eswash plate at the correct angle/position
The NON CCPM
system however does not rely on this mixing, so each servo
only has a single task to perform, Pitch control (Collective),
Elevator and Aileron. So if you lost say the pitch control on
a NON CCPM helicopter, the swash plate would stop rising and falling
when told to by the throttle/collective stick, but you could still
land it safely by lowering the speed of the main rotor blades as you
still have full control of the Elevator and Aileron controls
A quick way to
identify what type of control your helicopter uses is to look at the
swash plate. There are always 3 servos connected to 3 balls on
the outer ring of the swash plate. If those swash plate balls
are separated by only 90 degrees (a right angle) then it is
NON CCPM. If the angle that separates them is 120 (or possibly
140) degrees, then it is a FULL CCPM system.

You can see that the outer ball connectors are at 90 degrees
feature of NON CCPM machines is that they are usually easier to
repair and setup.
