C4 - GENERAL - Have you done your FAIL/SAFE setup - it is CRUCIAL that you do ?

I read on the forums quite regularly about pilots having their helicopters suddenly spool up on them unexpectedly, and quite often this can lead to bad or even severe injury, but it CAN BE CONTROLLED IF YOU USE THE FAIL/SAFE SETUP PROVIDED BY MOST DECENT RADIOS.

The problem is that many pilots believe that the ESC has the "smarts" built in to not allow the helicopter to spool up unless the throttle is opened intentionally.  That is not a belief that I subscribe to in all honesty.

It is very easy to forget to do the FAIL/SAFE setup because it involves rebinding the radio Tx to the Rx, and that is something we have already done, probably some time ago, so it never enters our head, particularly after we have been all through our radio setups and got it all working just as we want it to work.


To setup the FAIL/SAFE on most radios is quite a simple thing to do, as you just need to set the transmitter up with all the settings and stick positions you want your helicopter to return to in the event of a brown out or total loss of connections.

So the major one to avoid these uncontrolled spool ups is to set the throttle to the fully closed position. The cyclic can be left centred and that is about it. Then you go through the normal bind process with the transmitter in the FAIL/SAFE status you want. 

That is all there is to it to protect yourself against injury 
and/or damage to your helicopter, or even both ....
